🦟 Fun Facts About Fleas

  • Fleas are tiny, wingless insects (order Siphonaptera). Around 2,500 species are known worldwide, and an adult is only about 1.5 to 3 millimetres long.
  • Champion jumpers: some fleas can leap dozens of times their own body length. Their secret is a spring-like protein called resilin that stores energy and releases it in an instant. That is exactly why Lee dreams of jumping all the way to the Red Lake!
  • Four life stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult. The larvae feed on organic matter, while adult fleas feed only on fresh blood. Over 94% of flea species live on mammals, and about 3% on birds.
  • Only about 5% of a flea population is adult fleas. The rest, eggs, larvae and pupae, are often hidden in the surroundings, such as bedding and carpets, and not on the animal itself.

🐾 Which Animals Do Fleas Like to Ride On?

Fleas hitchhike on many warm-blooded animals: cats (the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis, is also the most common flea on dogs), rats and mice, rabbits, squirrels, hedgehogs (which have their own hedgehog flea), bats, birds and even people (the human flea, Pulex irritans). If your pet has fleas, ask your vet for safe treatment.

⭐ Famous Fleas

  • Messi, "La Pulga": football star Lionel Messi has been nicknamed La Pulga, Spanish for "the flea", since childhood (and later La Pulga Atómica, "the Atomic Flea"), because he is small, quick and very hard to catch. Proof that a small one can do big things, just like Lee.
  • Flea the musician: Michael Balzary, known simply as "Flea", is the bass player of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
  • Robert Hooke's flea: in 1665 the scientist Robert Hooke published a giant, detailed drawing of a flea seen under a microscope in his book Micrographia.
  • The flea circus: from the 1830s, "flea circuses" in Europe showed fleas dressed up as little people. The story of the circus fleas that stop jumping high is told in The Flea Experiment: The Invisible Lid That Holds Us Back.
  • The oriental rat flea (Xenopsylla cheopis) is the flea known for carrying the bacterium that causes bubonic plague. Today, of course, we know fleas are best as storybook heroes!
  • Lee the Flea (and Josh the Flea in the Hebrew edition): a little flea who believes in himself, listens to the one friend who believes in him and jumps beyond the fear.
